Our Autumn concert opens with one of Rossini’s most popular overtures, the evocative Thieving Magpie which is full of the composer’s familiar musical devices. There follows Vaughan Williams’s beautiful Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus. The first half will conclude with Gershwin’s exuberant and jazzy Rhapsody in Blue which has been a great crowd pleaser for almost a century. The second half is devoted to a performance of Ravel’s sumptuous orchestration of Mussorgsky’s imaginative Pictures at an Exhibition.
