We open our spring concert with rarely heard music by Russian composers: the overture to Song of the Volga by Anton Arensky, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mlada Suite, all music written at the turn of the last century with all the instrumental and harmonic colour of that period. The concerto item will be the delightful Horn Concerto no.3 by Mozart with all the classical poise and beauty we expect from the composer. After the interval we will play Sibelius’s First Symphony which although written about the same time and geographically not too distant from the first two items in the concert it has the expansiveness and drama we associate with the composer’s later works
