For our season finale, we begin with Dvořák’s Carnival Overture, one of three overtures the composer wrote late in life. As the title suggests, this is the lively and joyful one. Next comes Mendelssohn’s First Piano concerto which offers a number of opportunities for some virtuosity as well beauty. Finally, the grandest piece of our year, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no.5 with its memorable motto theme heard at the opening and in the closing passages.
